Last days

Soo, now I’m at the airport in Doha, Qatar, on the way home to Norway. Have had an awesome last couple of days in Nairobi, Masai Maara and Mombasa.

So Carnivore was really cool! Got to eat crocodile (VERY unusual taste, could never decide wether it was fish or meat..) and ostrich which was REALLY good! Me and Rahul jugged down some TENTA before we left, so was a happy night :p

Day after: safari! Started out by the hotel at 830 and met with the rest of the group. Me, Betty and Rahul met with Tasha and Ashley from the US, Paul from Canada ey, and The good doctor (as he was to be known as) from Iran. His name just wouldn’t stick… :/ Turned out to be an amazing group to travel with – miss you guys =)Had a 6 hour drive where 3 of it was BUMPY as nothing I’ve ever experienced before! After 2,5 you actually get used to it :o Think I might have gotten a concussion aswell from sleeping and banging my head in the window of the car :p We arrived at the camp where we were to stay in tents. Well, not really tents, was more like lodges, so bumped the expectations up a little :p After settling in, we went out for our first game-drive! Was blown away when going past zebras, giraffes, lions, impalas, waterbuffalos and much more.. After 2 hours touring around with our amazing driver – Nathaniel – we went back to the “tents” to have dinner and an early night as the next day we were starting off at 6 am…

6 am! Rise and shine! Went for a whole-day game drive and as the day before, we saw the giraffes, zebras, lions, etc, and after driving really far into the maara, we got to see hippos and crocodiles aswell as a lioness up close. We also had lunch out in the middle of nowhere, really nice! We drove back at around 3 and everybody fell asleep – despite the somewhat shaky road on the way back. Arriving at the camp we had a couple of drinks, dinner with periodically power-cuts so we ate in the romantic lighting from our cellphones, and then bed… It’s amazing how a day of just driving around just drains you!

Last day – Saturday – we went for a drive in the morning, got to see two giraffes mating (or trying to anyway – giraaaaaaffe?) and an amazing sunrise… Back to the camp, had some breakfast and then drove back to Nairobi. When we reached the proper road it was like floating on air! :D I met up with Betty, Paul, Edwin and Grace for our last dinner together in the EA-house – very good night!

Next morning we had breakfast just outside the hotel and all of a sudden there was a huge crowd gathering outside. Not for us tho, some lady was threatening to jump from a second floor balcony. After a couple of minutes screaming to her boyfriend about this and that, she was helped inside again. The TV-team that was there looked a bit disappointed actually :p This was the last (so far atleast) we saw of Tasha, Ashley and Paul. The good doctor had left for Tanzania at 730 that morning, and me and rahul went on the bus for Nairobi at 9:30. A trip where we sat in front of Sir smellsalot, it was just insane… So a LONG 9 hours! Also watched the in-bustrip-movies. First some random stuff I slept through, then Men of Honour – good movie - and then one of the worst movies I’ve every seen. Something about a couple of extraordinary large crocodiles in some river that were hostile like nothing else and people tried to kill them with chainsaws to their tails and shotguns with exploding shells and AAAAAH! I get irritated just from thinking about it. In other words: recommended. Came back to mbsa, had a couple of drinks at the white sands resort with some friends and then we just went home to chill. Rahul and me were watchin some Dave Chapelle-clips on youtube – hilarious stuff! Chip! :D

Last day in Mombasa, Monday. I went to the hospital to take some photos with the people I’ve worked with and then me and Rahul went to town to check out some of the markets and then had dinner at Mikayes – the bar that is just on the other side of the wall from where we live :p Had my last walk on the beach at night, and then it was off to bed..

Today we went to the hospital first, dropped off Rahul and then Rasta took me to the airport. After A LOT of confusion for the immigration-stuff (trust me – get there early) I set of for Zanzibar and Dar es salaam. I definitely have to go to Zanzibar one day, just seeing the water and the beaches from the plane was amazing!

And all that takes me here! Doha airport, Qatar. Never seen this many men in dresses before… It’s 21:50 now, my plane is at 2:00, so have plenty of time to do nothing… Knowing myself I’ll end up thinking about the last month ‘till I fall asleep and get mugged or something =)

Wierd to be going back…

A little tour

So today I went with the taxi-guy that Elective Africa have here in Nairobi around for a little tour! First we went to an elephant orphanage. They were a\everything from 5-6 months and up to 28 months and really cute! :D Just look at the photo! (gotta love cell-phones!) After, it was the giraff-park where you can feed the giraffs! Did that and got to know Daisy the giraff ^^ Next we went for lunch and then to the national museum. Got a private tour (probably because I'm the only student now :p) of the whole museum. Really interesting to see the evolution of man from chimp and the different species of animals that lives here in Kenya.

Also on the way over to the museum I met Fritz! Fritz is 70 years old, from Germany, and is travelling the whole of east africa for 3,5 months all by himself, getting around on buses, boats and whatever else, no flights. He had gone from madagascar to tanzania on a 3-day boat trip where he slept on the floor! Really cool guy, shows itæs never to late for a wicked experience! :D

So just chilling in the hotel now. Rahul is coming tonight and then we are going to CARNIVORE with Edwin, Grace, Betty and Paul! :D Tomorrow it's safari-time in the masai mara :)

Last week!

Can't believe how fast this month has gone by...

This monday I went to casualty with Rahul, the other student who is here. Was really good, because he knows so much and takes his time explaining it to me! Everything from enlarged hearts to x-ray-interpretation to catheters to stitching! It's so much better to be there when you have someone like that who actually invests some time in you!

It turned quiet after a while and then I got a call from Dr. Faiqa! "Hey, are you busy? I have no assistant and there is a C-section now, can you get here?" Haha, how cool is that, I actually got called in to assist on a procedure! ^^ Felt relly like a pro. I wanted to really run there to make it look like really serious, but that prolly would have scard people, so it ended up in a fast walk :p

Went home and this night we went to the cops to get an abstract for the theft of the camera and then just chilled out and at cake! "Death by choc" it was called! Gotta love it :D

Tuesday I took the bus to Nairobi. 8,5 hours, but well vented and they even have a stewardess on the bus! Handed out drinks and snacks, nice. Met up with Edwin and Grace here to grab a bite to eat. Met a really pushy waiter who managed to deliver different food from what we ordered and when it did come, it wasn't properly made... However, they DID have supersport 3 where the Manchester United-game was, so all in all it was ok ;) 3 - 2 and still in the FA-cup =) <3 Chicharito!

Since last time..

So the nightshift I wrote about turned out to be a quiet one. Had one more surgery in the morning after, and then it ws home. It was wierd, I had slept on and off the entire night, so when I got home, I slept away most of the day too... Wich was good as I was going back to the hospital that same night for another go at nights... This shift also turned out slow, but instead of sleeping on the couch as I did the last time, I decided to give a stretcher a go! Wasn't exactly comfortable, but hey, did the trick... What DIDN'T do the trick was sleeping without a mosquitonet and having an insect-repellant that only lasted for 2-3 hours before having to be re-applied. Well guess what, you don't wake up thinking you have to reapply it, you just wake up and see that the mosquitos have had a field day on your legs arms and back... GREAT! Still no malaria tho! :D

On thursday I went back to main theatre and got to assist on an ortho-surgery. 4 screws into the hip for some unfortunate guy who had decided to measure strength with a bus. He lost.

Now comes the weekend, and what a weekend! Went to Malindi - about 2 hours north of Mombasa - on friday with Dr. Faiqa and her sister. Nice place, just walked around and visited some of their family and then at night we went with the guy we were staying with to the beach. Went swimming in the moonlight, soooo nice! After that we went to eat at one of the many many italian restaurants there. It's like little Italy, really... Went back to the place we lived at about 10ish, slept and I got woken up at 1, then we were going out. It was seriously the LAST thing on my mind. I was soooo tired, not keen on going out at all, but they dragged me along anyway.. So I decided I had to give it a go, so ordered some energy-boosting drinks rigth away, and all of a sudden, things were SWEET! :D We were at Stardust (one of the clubs) 'till it closed at 430, then went to the pier to watch the sunrise... What a night!

After some well deserved hours in dreamland, we went to marina park to go snorkeling! Bought a loaf of bread and started throwing it in the water and just like that it was crawling (or swimming) with fish! So jumped in like a proper diver (back first, hurt like ****) and swam around for about an hour. Got some really nice photos too! Swam under our boat and took pictures through the bottom of the boat. I decided to do the same to another bout that was next to us, when I came up on the pother side, they threw bread to me! Like I was the rare big white cod or whatever... Met those guys after, they just called me "hey, there is the big fish!" :D All PR is good PR ;)

Now, you'll never actually SEE those photos, because the camera is now stolen... Goodie! Just before the safari too.. Oh well, just another reason to come back =)

Just a quickie...

It's night time in the hospital - my first nightshift in OBGYN. Luckily it's quiet now. We did 2 C-sections, now we're all just trying to get some shut-eye before things MIGHT break out again... Hopefully all the babies are sleeping tonight aswell!

Good night! (I hope)
